Pre-Tan Care: Do’s and Don’ts

Do’s:

  • Exfoliate Your Skin: Exfoliate 24 hours before your appointment to remove dead skin cells, ensuring an even application. Focus on areas like elbows, knees, and ankles.
  • Shave or Wax: Complete any hair removal 24 hours prior to your spray tan to allow your pores to close and prevent dark spots.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated and help your tan last longer.
  • Clean Skin: Arrive with clean, dry skin, free of lotions, oils, deodorants, or perfumes, as these can act as barriers to the tanning solution.
  • Loose, Dark Clothing: Wear loose, dark clothing to your appointment to prevent staining and allow your tan to set properly.

Don’ts:

  • No Moisturizers: Avoid using moisturizers on the day of your appointment, as they can interfere with the tanning solution.
  • No Makeup: If possible, come with a clean face to ensure even coverage for facial tans.
  • No Tight Clothing: Do not wear tight clothing or undergarments that could rub off the tan before it has time to set.

Post-Tan Care: Do’s and Don’ts

Do’s:

  • Wait to Shower: Wait at least 8-10 hours before showering to allow the tanning solution to fully develop. If possible, wait up to 24 hours for optimal results.
  • Gentle Rinse: During your first shower, rinse with lukewarm water only. Use your hands to gently wash your body, avoiding scrubbing or exfoliating.
  • Pat Dry: After showering, pat your skin dry with a towel instead of rubbing to prevent your tan from fading unevenly.
  • Moisturize Daily: Keep your skin hydrated by moisturizing twice a day with a hydrating, oil-free lotion to extend the life of your tan.
  • Stay Hydrated: Continue to drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out.

Don’ts:

  • Avoid Sweating: Refrain from activities that cause heavy sweating, such as exercise, for at least 24 hours after your spray tan.
  • No Hot Baths or Saunas: Avoid long, hot baths, hot tubs, or saunas as these can cause your tan to fade more quickly.
  • No Harsh Products: Do not use exfoliating products, oil-based lotions, or acne medications that can strip your tan.
  • Avoid Chlorine: Steer clear of swimming pools and hot tubs, as chlorine can lead to premature fading of your tan.

Best Ways to Maintain Your Tan

  1. Hydrate Your Skin: Regularly apply a high-quality, oil-free moisturizer to keep your skin smooth and prolong your tan.
  2. Use Tan Extenders: Consider using a tan extender lotion designed to boost the longevity of your spray tan.
  3. Gentle Cleansing: Opt for gentle, sulfate-free body washes to avoid stripping your tan.
  4. Protect Your Skin: Always use sunscreen when exposed to the sun, as spray tans do not offer UV protection.
  5. Avoid Exfoliation: Refrain from using exfoliating scrubs or body brushes until you’re ready to remove your tan and prepare for your next session.
